Currawinya Workshop Series

Location: Paddys Flat Road, Tabulam NSW 2469

Currawinya Workshop Series

Through the Hotspots workshops, improved community connections were made between neighbours including 4th generation graziers and newcomers to the land. There is also now an improved understanding of the needs of the bush.

Since the workshop, an 11km prescribed burn was conducted with National Parks & Wildlife Service to reduce the risk of wildfire as well as additional ecological burns for the threatened Brush-tailed Rock-Wallaby.

New Volunteers

As a result of the workshops, 4 new Currawinya volunteers joined the Pretty Gully Brigade which resulted in a new fire truck and prevented the brigade from closing.

Prescribed Burns

In July 2006, Currawinya undertook its first controlled burn with assistance from the Pretty Gully Brigade – a small 2.5 hectare burn to improve habitat of the Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby. A second, larger burn along the 11 km property boundary with National Parks was later implemented. In August 2009, the residents worked again with the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) to implement a planned burn. Additionally the NPWS assisted with the construction of a fire trail around the perimeter of the property as part of the property management plan completed as part of the Hotspots workshop series.

In December 2009, a wildfire threatened the property and residents believe their recent fire management activities significantly contributed to the safe containment of that fire before burning out onto their property.
