Before You Light that Fire

Have the 2019/20 bush fires triggered you to think about your property fire management plan? This is a timely reminder to revisit your Hotspots property fire management plan. If you are planning to conduct a burn, first read the Rural Fire Service’s Before You Light That Fire publication. It has recently been reviewed and updated (and the cover photo features the Hotspots Fire Project!).

This document provides a step-by-step guide to preparing for a burn, whether to reduce bushfire hazards, for agricultural management, or for ecological or cultural purposes.

Inappropriate use of fire can endanger lives, property and the environment. Before lighting your planned burn, ensure you have:

  • Gained environmental approval (if required)
  • Been issued with a fire permit (if required)
  • Notified all adjoining owners and occupiers
  • Notified your local fire authority
  • Ensure it is not a Total Fire Ban Day.
  • Download Before You Light That Fire: http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0013/12451/Before-you-light-that-fire-2020.pdf

Remember to have conversations with your neighbours about fire management planning and look for ways to collaborate and complement each other’s work to achieve better bushfire risk management and biodiversity outcomes.
